Showers are rough on grout. And it’s not just about splashing water — it’s the daily steam, humidity, and condensation. All that moisture can break down grout fast if you don’t use the right kind. So let’s talk about what works — and what to avoid.
When clients ask about the best grout for shower use, I always steer them toward materials that can handle constant exposure to moisture. Choosing the right grout isn’t just a detail — it determines whether your remodel lasts for years or needs rework in months.
Let me be blunt: cement-based grout does not belong in a shower. It’s porous — meaning it soaks up water. Even if you seal it (which many homeowners skip), it won’t stay protected forever. And once moisture gets in? You’re looking at issues like:
Cement grout might be cheaper upfront, but the maintenance and repairs later cost you more. Especially in wet areas like showers or tub surrounds, the risk just isn’t worth it.
When I remodel a bathroom, especially a shower, I use epoxy grout. Period.
Here’s why epoxy grout wins every time:
Yes, epoxy grout costs more — and takes more skill to install. But if you want to do it once and do it right, it’s hands-down the best grout for your shower.
Now, if you’re planning to DIY your bathroom, take this seriously:
Epoxy grout is not beginner-friendly.
You need to work fast. Once mixed, epoxy grout starts curing right away — and if you let haze dry on the tile, it’s almost impossible to remove without damaging the surface. It also requires proper tools, technique, and cleaning strategy as you go.
My advice?
Over the years, I’ve tested just about every grout brand out there. For epoxy jobs, my go-to is SpectraLOCK Pro Premium Grout.
Here’s why I like it:
And no — I’m not paid to say that. It’s just a great product that holds up in Texas humidity and performs year after year.
We’ve installed epoxy grout on:
If a space is going to get wet often — or if it needs to stay easy to clean — epoxy is the way to go.
There are a lot of products on the market today claiming to be “easy epoxy alternatives” — like single-component grouts or sealant additives for cement grout.
Here’s my take:
If you want true durability and waterproofing, stick with epoxy. No shortcuts.
