Remodeling Bathroom The Woodlands – A Stylish & Kid-Friendly Project

By Frank Puente, General Contractor and Owner of Premium Residential Remodeling

Remodeling a bathroom isn’t just about updating fixtures or picking trendy tile. It’s about creating a space that fits the lifestyle, needs, and tastes of the people using it every day. For one young family in The Woodlands, we were tasked with delivering a bathroom that was both modern and practical—something stylish enough to impress guests but also durable and easy to clean for a household with energetic kids.

This particular remodeling bathroom The Woodlands project gave us a great opportunity to get creative while prioritizing safety, cleanliness, and family-friendly design. Here’s a closer look at how we approached the project, what made it unique, and one funny memory that reminds us why we love what we do.

Family-Centered Bathroom Design

When designing a bathroom for a young family, it’s all about balance. You want beauty, of course—but you also need safety, storage, and materials that can withstand wear and tear. The bathroom we remodeled had an outdated layout, slippery floors, and very little storage space. Our client wanted something fresh that wouldn’t require constant cleaning or repair.

We started with the shower—both a focal point and one of the most heavily used parts of the space. The homeowners liked the idea of something organic and non-slip, so we installed pebble flooring in the shower. Not only does it offer excellent traction (ideal for children), but it also brings a calming, spa-like feel to the space. For the walls, we chose ceramic tiles that mimic the look of beaten stone and woven fabric—a rare, textured style that adds warmth and depth.

These tiles were sourced from Interceramic, and ironically, they’ve since gone out of business. That makes this bathroom one of the few that features this beautiful tile—a unique design detail that the family loves.

Functional Details That Matter

Every small decision makes a big difference in a high-use space like a family bathroom. For this remodel, we incorporated recessed shampoo niches into the shower wall and finished them with the same pebble texture used on the floor. This helped unify the look while adding functionality and keeping everything easy to clean.

Instead of using a traditional glass enclosure with multiple panels, we installed a single sleek glass shower panel. This allowed us to use large, angled shower heads that improved water flow and created a more open, accessible space for both adults and children. Less glass also meant less cleaning—another win for the parents.

Choosing Low-Maintenance Materials

As anyone with kids knows, less maintenance means more peace of mind. That’s why we used materials that are known for their durability, water resistance, and ease of upkeep. Ceramic and natural stone are perfect for wet environments and are much easier to care for than porous alternatives.

We also paid special attention to grout spacing and sealant quality—two often overlooked elements that can make or break a family-friendly bathroom. Wider grout lines were minimized where possible, and we used a high-quality grout sealant to resist mildew and stains.

A Funny (and Furry) Surprise

No remodeling project is complete without at least one unexpected twist. Several months after completing the bathroom, the client called us with a drainage issue. Water wasn’t clearing out of the shower like it used to.

When we went back to inspect it, we discovered the cause: their young son had been giving his pet guinea pig regular baths in the shower. All that fur had clogged the drain!

While it technically wasn’t a warranty issue, we resolved it at no charge as a gesture of goodwill. It was a lighthearted reminder of why we offer a solid one-year warranty—and how important it is to stand by your work, even when kids (and pets) do the unexpected.
